What Does It Mean to Be an Accredited Investor?
Being an accredited investor means that you meet the financial criteria outlined by the SEC, which allows you access to investment opportunities not available to the general public. Specifically, you qualify as an accredited investor if you meet at least one of the following criteria:
Income Requirement
You have an individual annual income exceeding $200,000 (or joint income with a spouse exceeding $300,000) for each of the last two years, with a reasonable expectation of maintaining that income level in the current year.
Net Worth Requirement
You have an individual net worth, or a joint net worth with your spouse, that exceeds $1 million at the time of the investment, excluding the value of your primary residence.
As an accredited investor, you can invest in private equity, hedge funds, venture capital, equity crowdfunding, and other high-return opportunities typically reserved for institutional investors.
